Sizemore makes spring debut for Sox

Thursday marked the first game action of any kind for Grady Sizemore since September of 2011.  That’s nearly 900 days away from the game for the former Gold-Glove outfielder.  He went hitless in 2 at bats from the leadoff spot, playing 3 innings in left field for the defending champs against the Northeastern University Huskies.  It was a rather uneventful day, which is a good thing for the oft-injured Sizemore.

Sizemore feeling better than expected, prepares for first Spring game on Thursday

Despire originally thinking that he probably wouldn’t be ready for the first spring action on Thursday, on Monday manager John Farrell announced that Grady Sizemore would suit up for the Red Sox in one of two 7-inning split-squad games on Thursday against Boston College and Northeastern.

Sizemore’s body has reacted better than expected to an increased workload, causing the Red Sox medical staff and management to adjust up their timeline for the former All-Star.

“Definitely better than expected,” Sizemore said Tuesday when asked about his health. “I didn’t expect to come in here and have continuous days without any issues and be able to keep pushing it to keep up with the volume and keep going from there.”

For the first time in his career, Red Sox outfielder Grady Sizemore is taking it slow

Jason Mastrodonato at MassLive.com has an intriguing look at Grady and how he feels about getting back into the game after a 2 year layoff.

Grady SizemoreSizemore smiles for the fans and seems in a good enough mood, but something doesn’t feel quite right. His mother, Donna, says he’s naturally shy and likes to keep to himself, so all the attention could be adding to the discomfort. But that’s not why he feels weird.

Grady Sizemore feels weird because he’s wearing a major league uniform for the first time since 2011.

“It feels really good,” he said. “But it feels weird to put the uniform on again.”

Grady Sizemore wondering what’s left

Gordon Edes has a wonderful article up on ESPN about Grady and his expectations so far for 2014.

ny_sizemore_d1_300x300Oh, no, Grady Sizemore said Wednesday, he wasn’t injury prone as a kid growing up in Washington state.

Never fell out of a tree or got hit by a car?

On second thought …

“I actually did both of those things,” he said, seemingly startled by the memory. “I was going to tell you, ‘No, I’m not injury prone,’ but I did both of those things in elementary school, so I guess I am.

“I fell off a playground thing and hit my head pretty good. I got hit by a car while riding my bike. Nothing really happened. I got a little bruise.”

That was it?

“Nothing major. It knocked me out, yeah.”

That’s not major?

“Well, I woke up feeling fine. I had a baseball game that night. I wanted to play, but my dad wouldn’t let me.”
